When writing short stories, one may find that they have quite a difficult time of writing one smoothly and effectively. Writing unlocks the mind and shows others the creative side of each and every person. From experience, I know what it is like to come up with something interesting, or funny, or both. Every year in school I was told to keep to the "5 paragraph" format of writing everything from analytical papers about an Edgar Allen Poe poem to a narrative.

However, writing short stories just does not work that way. You need to be able to expand your ideas, explain them to your audience, and create a world that the reader can get lost in and hopefully relate to the characters in the story. To make sure that everyone has an equal chance of creating great stories, here are my top tips of writing a fantastic short story.

Tip #1: Always have an outline of some sort.

-One thing that I find that a lot of people have is starting their story without any base or foundation. You can not build a house without it's blueprint, and you can not write a great short story without some idea of what you are writing about.

Tip #2: Take your time.

-Great stories take time. Think of them as a plant. It needs water, sunshine, and love, and whilst a paper obviously does not need those things, but it is important that you take your time and use effort and love towards your work.It will completely pay off in the end and make your writing skills blossom and make you into the great writer that you are meant to be.

Tip #3: Always allow someone to overlook your work and give you constructive criticism.

-Whether it be your mom, sister, best friend, or teacher, have someone look over your work for grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and for overall affect that your stories has to the audience. Ask for their advice and take it for what it is. Remember that they are not trying to say that your writing is poor or that you are not a good writer, they are just trying to give you ideas and tips to make your story that much better.

Tip #4: Proofread, proofread, proofread!

-Proofreading is one of the most important tips that I can give you on writing a great short story. If it helps, print it out and take a red pen to it, correcting any mistakes that you see and writing in new ideas you have. Then, type whatever you have corrected or added, and proofread it again on the computer. Trust me, you will be much happier with the results if you take your time and truly make sure that your story is perfect.

These are just my top tips for making your story great, and if you keep these in mind, you are sure to prosper in all of your endeavors and make you completely happy with what you have accomplished
